Lendlease approached ApMurra Furniture for the unique potential of bringing together story with design and fabrication. Multiple design development iterations occurred throughout the process involving Elliat Rich, Lendlease teams from various business units (RAP, Procurement & Development, and the Darling Square Project team), Outside Assembly and ASPECT Studios. The prototyping stage, comprised of numerous iterations and tests, was undertaken in a collaboration between the ApMurra workshop team and Bushell Engineering. Bushell Engineering are an experienced metal work company who had an existing relationship with Outside Assembly and prototyping of furniture. This collaboration enabled the sharing of knowledge with ApMurra regarding practice, process, equipment and niche skills in this specific fabrication arena. Furntech, were engaged by ApMurra to test the chair product to provide a commercial rating. The slings are designed by Central Australian Aboriginal artists. The frames, made of aluminium and stainless steel, are powder coated to match the colours of the sling. New artist collaborations will be added over time, increasing the range. This pattern, “Awelye ceremonies”, represents the pencil yam in its early stages of maturity. The artist, Rachael Nambula, was born in the Utopia region, north of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. The Anerle-aneme chair evokes the ruggedness and ancient strength of Australia’s outback through the use of durable materials and captures the unique colours of the landscape through the use of vibrant blues, ochre and the soft green of the vegetation, and the silver grey of heat-refracting light. The Anerle-aneme chair is designed by Central Australian designer Elliat Rich. The chair showcases the success of a collaboration that brings together the stories, skills and cultures of Central Australia. The chair was manufactured by the ApMurra Furniture team in our fabrication workshop and displayed as part of the Australia’s exhibition at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2016. A centre point of their redevelopment is The Exchange, a multipurpose building designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. On the ground level is an upmarket food court, Maker's Dozen, fitted out with furniture designed by Koskela and manufactured by ApMurra Furniture. Koskela is proud to regularly collaborate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and makers, and working with ApMurra was no exception. The Koskela design team travelled to Alice Springs to visit the fabrication workshop, and developed the furniture so it could be made using the workshop machinery. The stools were designed in-house by the fabrication team, with the aim to make an adaptable design that could be custom manufactured for height and versatility. This brainstorming idea from the team is a representation of their innovative expression to do something outside the box and give back to the community, particularly the young and old.
